What are the best barefoot sandals without a toe strap?
For those who dislike straps between their toes, the ZuZu Drift is a premium, non-huarache barefoot sandal. It features a zero-drop, 9mm stack height that hits a very specific sweet spot. Underfoot, it feels closer to a thinner, more flexible sandal, but it gives noticeably more comfort than you would usually expect from something that minimal. You still get the close ground feel of barefoot footwear, with just enough cushioning to make pavement, travel, and long everyday walks feel easier.
Built with 100% recycled zero-stretch straps, an ultra-durable Velcro adjustment system, and a high-traction organic canvas footbed designed specifically to prevent the foot from slipping when wet.
The Why
Just months after launching our first ZuZu Barefoot models, our inbox flooded. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive from the huarache crowd, but a loud chorus of friends and customers had one specific request: "Can you make a barefoot sandal for people who can't stand having anything between their toes?" (And it was usually followed with “DO IT NOW!”)
We knew that many who eventually tried our toe-strapped models ended up getting hooked. But we also understood that true minimalist freedom means footwear that feels invisible to the wearer. If a toe-post becomes a distraction, it defeats the purpose. We set out to give those lovely folks exactly what they asked for. But we wanted to do it right.
We just didn't realize it would take us four and a half years to perfect it.
Scrapping the Ideas That Almost Worked
At ZuZu, our design philosophy is strict: less is more. We believe in simple ideas, perfected.
Over the years, we engineered five entirely different design concepts. We tested everything from fully adjustable single-strap solutions to elaborate cross-ankle toe-post hybrids. With every prototype, we gained new biomechanical insights, but they kept failing our most rigorous test: the aesthetic. They looked too bulky, too complex, or too cluttered.
We refused to release a sandal that didn't align with our timeless, minimalist DNA. We kept scrapping designs until we finally stripped away the noise and found the balance we were looking for.
If You Made It This Far, Here’s the Technical Rabbit Hole
The magic of ZuZu is always in the details. To build a single pair of Drift sandals, we combine four distinct sole materials and rely on precision lasers and some material engineering tricks to solve the common pitfalls of standard barefoot footwear.
The Tech Specs:
-
The "Magic" stack height: The total stack is 9mm. However, through our unique material composition and lug design, it delivers the raw ground feel of a comparable 7mm sole while providing the concrete-city-walking cushioning as if you had 12mm underfoot.
-
Zero underfoot strap sensation: Traditional strapped sandals often leave you feeling the lumps of the webbing under your foot. We use precision laser-cut cavities in the sole to countersink the straps completely, eliminating any underfoot bumps.
-
Recycled High-Traction Outsole: We retained just enough tread depth on our super-flexible, recycled rubber and rice husk outsole to ensure maximum grip without sacrificing the barefoot ground feel.
-
Zero-Stretch Signature Webbing: Our straps are 100% recycled and engineered to be as soft as physically possible against the skin, with a crucial feature: they do not stretch when wet.
-
Ultra-Premium Velcro: We are generally cautious with Velcro, but we sourced the most expensive, highly durable hook-and-loop system available. It provides the easiest, sleekest adjustment method without wearing out over time. We wouldn’t go with hook-and-loop if that wasn’t the case.
The Water Test: ZuZu Drift vs. The rest (Solving the Slippery Footbed)
If you have ever crossed a stream, caught in a sudden downpour, or just sweat heavily in other adventure sandals - specifically non-huarache models like Xero Shoes' Z-Trek or Z-Trail - you likely know the feeling of your foot dangerously sliding around on the footbed.
Without a toe post to act as an anchor, a wet rubber or synthetic footbed creates a hydroplaning effect against your skin. To compensate, wearers naturally start "toe-clawing" and sliding around the sandals.
Why Drift feels more stable when wet:
Instead of a smooth synthetic top layer, the Drift utilizes an organic canvas footbed.
-
Canvas Grip: The organic canvas footbed has a natural woven texture that gives your foot more grip than a smooth rubber or synthetic surface, especially when wet.
-
Less Sliding When Wet: Instead of letting water pool between your foot and the sandal, the canvas helps break up that slippery layer, so your foot stays more stable and relaxed.
-
Stable Fit: The canvas footbed works together with the zero-stretch straps to keep the sandal feeling secure, even in water or sweat.

This Took Much Longer Than We Imagined
Four and a half years of prototyping, testing, tweaking, and refining the smallest details went into the ZuZu Drift.
The result is a lightweight, easy-to-use barefoot sandal with a no-toe-post design, strong wet traction, recycled materials, a simple adjustment system, and carefully chosen colorways.
Built to move with you naturally, without friction or fuss. Just slip them on and drift.
